Guifi.net is a WAN by technological, social and economics meanings. It is based on the free, open and neutral telecommunications model.
The network is nationwide extended in Catalonia and several areas in other countries. Wifi 2.4 GHz links were commonly used on the beginnings, built on infrastructure network configurations.
Later, the 2.4 GHz devices were replaced by newer 5 GHz devices with multi-channel multiplex to achieve higher speeds. Several manufacturers like Ubiquiti or Mikrotik developed private standards to increase the speed and the guifi.net wireless network adopted the configuration of using Ubiquiti antennas and Mikrotik routers. That became a de facto standard.
Next, on some cases, networks were deployed by a mesh schema. Protocols like BATMAN started to be used for these networks and products like qMp (Quick Mesh Project) started to show up.
My involvement in guifi.net started at 2007 when I was working to expand the elCarmel.net wifi network on my district. Since then, many local networks on many cities and districts started to join the guifi.net WAN network by adopting the IP addressing and interconnecting their nodes. I eventually plugged the elCarmel.net network to guifi.net.
Apart from connecting to the net, I have collaborated on building many network nodes over the country. In example:
Here are some pictures taken from the node building operations:
