Guifi.net is a WAN by technological, social and economics meanings. It is based on the free, open and neutral telecommunications model.
The network is expanded alongside Catalonia and areas in other countries. Wifi 2.4 GHz links were commonly used on the beginnings, built on infrastructure network configurations.
Later, the 2.4 GHz devices were replaced by newer 5 GHz devices with multi-channel multiplex to achieve higher speeds. Several manufacturers like Ubiquiti or Mikrotik developed private standards to increase the speed and the guifi.net wireless network adopted the configuration of using Ubiquiti antennas and Mikrotik routers. That became a de facto standard.
Next, on some cases, networks were deployed by a mesh schema. Protocols like BATMAN started to be used for these networks and products like qMp (Quick Mesh Project) started to show up.
My involvement in guifi.net started at 2007 when I was working to expand the elCarmel.net wifi network on my district. Since then, many local networks
